Keloid ear lobule

This is an interesting case report of a giant keloid in the lobule of pinna following ear piercing.

30 years old female:

C/O

Swelling right lobule of ear - 5 years following ear lobe piercing

Gradually enlarging in size

Itching +

Pain and redness +

H/o tendency for keloid formation +

Discussion:A keloid is a type of scar which results in an overgrowth of tissue at the site of a healed skin injury. Keloids are firm, rubbery lesions or shiny, fibrous nodules and can vary from pink to flesh-colored or red to dark brown in color. A keloid scaris benign, non-contagious and usually accompanied by severe itchiness, sharp pains and changes in texture. Keloids are pretty rare in children. More common only in adults. There appears to be a genetic predisposition for tendency to keloid formation. Management:

Surgical excision was done in this patient because of thebulk of the lesion and the cosmetic defect caused by the lesion. As a follow up local injections of depot steroid preparations was administered for a period of 6 months, once in 3 weeks to prevent recurrence.
